While many countries in the world knew rationing during periods of crisis (like e.g. after the second world war) China maintained rationing of key products for more than 40 years (from the mid 1950s to the mid 1990s).
Usually rationed commodities were grain and oil products ("liang piao" like wheat, wheat floor, rice, cooking oils), colth ("bu piao" for clothes), cotton ("mian hua" for blankets and filling of winter coats) and car/ truck/ machine fuels, oils etc. ("you piao").
At times all kinds of good were rationed: matches, meat, vegetable, tooth paste, electric bulbs, bicycles, tofu, feces from public toilets (as fertilizer) etc. so that at times in certain places people held more than 100 different kinds of ration coupons at a time.
Rations were assigned according to age and labor intensity, so that industrial workers got higher rations than e.g. a teacher. At times and places there were special coupons for pregnant women, old age people and even for the dead (e.g. coffin nails).
Issuing bodies could be provinces, districts, counties, cities, townships, but also communes, factories or big construction sites or prisons as well as the military. Also there were coupons valid nationwide.
Ration coupons always show the issuing body (also the area of validity of the coupon), a date (and/or a period of validity), a commodity for which the coupons is good, a weight or value/ quantity. Many coupons have a "tear off" to devaluate them after use. Most cloth coupons are printed on one side only, most grain and fuel/ oil coupons on both sides. Often there is a instruction for use with a warning against forgery on the back side of the coupons.
