No-Date Civil War Token"J.C. Bailey Hotel and Thos. Bennett Grocer"
Here is an undated Civil War Token, created during America's Civil War when coinage was scarce. These tokens were privately made and traded as currency until coins became readily available to the public again. The subjects of the tokens included patriotic themes or merchant advertising. The United States government temporarily allowed the use of Civil War Tokens as money because the economic situation was so dire.
This token is a merchant token, also called a Store Card, for two separate and unaffiliated stores. One side has the words "J.C. Bailey City Hotel" and "Jersey City." This business was located on the waterfront of Jersey City at Hudson and Grand. The other side of the coin has the words "Thos. Bennett, 213 Fulton Street, N.Y." This was a grocer. The reference number for this token is NY-630-E, and the rarity is listed as R-5 on a scale of 1 to 9. ***The photos are of the actual token you will receive.***
