    Description

    This is an antique Japanese plate made by the
    Fukagawa
    family, most likely in the Meiji period. The signature is consistent with that used over several decades even without the scented orchid mark which is often seen -
    深川製 Fukagawa-sei, "Made by
    Fukagawa."
    As with all pieces made by the companies of this family it is made of high fire ceramic for lasting durability. It is hand painted with a deep red and light and dark blue and decorated with designs of peony flowers, maple leaves and koi fish. Most of the designs are trace in fine lines of gilt (see picture 9).     This dish measures 6 3/7" in diameter by 1" tall (17 x 2.5 cm). It remains in
