Patriotic Civil War TokenIf anyone attempts to tear it (the U.S. flag) down, shoot him on the spot - (John) DIX (Secretary of the Treasury)
Fuld 214/416a (copper) R-1 NGC MS-64 BN
This is one of the most historical patriotic tokens issued during the Civil War. DIX refers to John Adams Dix who was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Buchanan in January 1861 as his Presidential term was nearing its end. Just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, there was a lot of unrest throughout the country. Local authorities in the southern states were seizing control of Federal assets such as forts, arsenals, and revenue cutters. Newly appointed Secretary Dix was appalled and sent orders to secure the revenue cutters which were under control of the Treasury. Upon hearing that a Captain Breshwood of the revenue cutter McClelland was refusing to obey orders, Secretary Dix sent instructions to second-in-command Lt. Caldwell to arrest Captain Breshwood, take control of the ship, and treat Captain Breshwood as a mutineer if he attempted to interfere with the command of the cutter after his arrest. Secretary Dix also stated that if anyone attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot. This is the command which is memorialized on a few different varieties of the "DIX" Civil War tokens. This is a very nice uncirculated specimen of this historic token.
