    Civil War Store Card for John Stanton, Engraver and Token Maker in Cincinnati, Ohio

    John Stanton was the largest token maker in Cincinnati during the Civil War.  In addition to creating store card tokens for large numbers of merchants in and around the Ohio area, he also created dozens of varieties which advertise his own business.  Two custom dies were prepared and mated with his stock dies for production of his personal store cards.  This specimen features a rare buffalo die.  This buffalo die was only used to strike four Stanton store card varieties and a total of four varieties using obverse dies from three other merchants.  Two of the other merchant store cards are rated R-9 and two are rated R-10.  Prior to the publication of the 3rd edition store card book, the copper version of this Stanton die combination was rated R-7 and the other three Stanton store card varieties struck in brass, copper-nickel, and tin-plate were all rated R-9.  The copper store card is now rated R-8, the brass and copper-nickel varieties are still rated R-9, and I believe the change in rarity from R-9 to R-7 for the tin-plate variety in the 3rd edition is an error.  Though this token is certified by NGC, no examples of this variety appear in the NGC Census or PCGS Population Report.  Additionally, no examples of this variety appear in Heritage or StacksBowers archives nor in any of the token mail bid sales conducted by Steve Hayden going back to 1994.  As noted on the slab label, this token was previously in the collection of Henry South and it is a premium quality specimen.
