Civil War Store Card for Lanphear's Tobacco Shop in Cincinnati, OhioFuld OH165CZ-1b (brass) R-3 NGC MS-64
William Lanphear was one of the leading issuers of tokens during the Civil War. In the spring of 1862, he purchased a tobacco shop around the corner from his engraving and stenciling shop. He issued two store card tokens advertising his tobacco shop. Both tokens are uniface brass tokens that are a little thinner than most of the tokens he sold to merchants. This 5-cent token is struck on a 19mm planchet and it is somewhat uncommon. The other token was struck on a 22mm planchet and it is very scarce.
