Pulmonales was a medicine created by Dr. Edward Skinner and patented in 1862.
Dr. Skinner obtained his medical degree from Harvard that same year and also acquired an existing medicines business owned by the late J. Russel Spalding.
Pulmonales’ purpose was to provide “immediate relief of coughs, colds, hoarseness, and all bronchial and lung complaints.” It was sold as a white lozenge and it could be considered an early cough drop.
The digital image is an actual advertisement for Pulmonales that was published in the City Directory for Worcester, Massachusetts in 1863.
