Automatic Electric was a major manufacturer of telephones and central office equipment. Their engineering and quality was tops in the industry. They were a major supplier to the US navy.
The original paint is in such fine condition, considering it is almost 100 years old, it has been cleaned and polished. Most all phones this old require blasting and new paint. This ads to its value.
Strowger on the dial refers to Dr Strowger, an undertaker and inventor during the late 1800's, who learned that operators were referring customers to his competition. He invented the famous step switch that made dialing practical and very successful. It revolutionized the industry. The Automatic Electric Co acquired the rights to the switch and produced first and most acceptable dialing system.
This is a very well constructed telephone that is quite rugged and dependable. It is about years old and could last another century.
