Historic Classic! You don't see the Ericsson phones much in the United States, as you may know. This one has a metal case in a neat Art Deco look and seems to work very well. Bell rings when cranked. It has some aged wear, but appears complete and mostly original. Still has graphics, and inside tags. The crank handle is a replacement and of course, there could have been some paint touch ups over the 100 plus years it has been around. The transmitter (mouth piece) is a Kellogg's (Patent Nov 26, 1901), which Ericsson worked with while in the US and commonly used on their phones. The receiver is a Leich Electric and has some wear but internals are in pretty good shape.
This is the only phone of this model I could find with a bell added at top where you usually see a cover plate. It is cosmetic, but looks great! Not sure if Ericsson did this or a clever owner for appeal. Also, this most likely used some sort of batteries in lower cabinet, but not sure which type.
Great phone for serious collector. Could easily be cleaned up a bit to almost look new, but we do not alter original classics, we sell them as we find them. Ericsson has a fantastic company history if you are interested in researching them. They were early leaders and pioneers in telecommunications in Sweden and throughout the world and continue to be to the present day. In fact, for a time Sweden was ahead of the US in per household use of phones largely due to Ericsson's innovative pursuits.
Ericsson was founded in 1876 in Sweden, but opened a US headquarters in 1898 to distribute products. However, they never gained the market share needed in the US to maintain a presence and abandoned much of the US manufacturing efforts by 1918. This phone was produced primarily from 1909-1917 in Buffalo NY, but not in high quantities per our research (Ericsson was competing with to many local more recognized US phone companies).
This phone will make a perfect compliment to any antiqued room. While we sell a lot of classic oak crank phones, this one stands out from the crowd! I love the "E" inset on the ear piece bar. That and the cabinet style screams early 1900's design.
