Description
1920’s - 1950’s 3-Slot Payphone Original Wood Mounting BoardWas used where calls were wanted to come in to a payphone. This was not OFTEN, since the idea of a payphone was for you to pay for the call; not free-load! Many could not afford a phone in their home in the early days; so they’d use their neighbors phone. If the local drugstore had a phone that rang, they’d arrange to stand and wait for an arranged call. The caller didn’t need to pay for the call. Payphones were made without any room for a ringer. Local area telephone companies owned the payphones and installed them into locations so that
they
could profit, not the location or business near where they were. So where a ringer payphone was wanted, a ringer box was either under the shelf in a booth or towards the bottom board. This arrangement was not often used as recently as into the 1970’s. If you have an old 3-slotter and if you have an old ringer box steel or wood, arranging both on this board could be proper.
